Death of Mother de la Nativité at approximately 2 a.m. Sister
Marie-des-Saints-Anges says that "I witnessed her holy death Our good Sister
Sainte-Béatrix and I were at her bedside when she made the sign of the cross at
approximately 2 a.m. asking us to recite the litanies of the Blessed Virgin. She
then made as if she were going to sleep. We heard her say "Oh, my dear Jesus!"
and it was then that I thought I noticed that she was getting weaker. Upon
moving the light closer, we observed that she had already gone to a bettter world;
that was on April 5, 1864." At the time of her death, the founder of the
Misericordia Sisters left behind her 33 sisters, 5 novices and 6 postulants. From
May 1, 1845 to April 5, 1864, the Institute welcomed 2,244 pregnant unwed girls and women,
many of whom decided to devote their life to our Lord. Furthermore, many women
living in poverty were provided support in their home. Rosalie Cadron-Jetté
was survived by six of her children all married. Four of them had given her 41
grandchildren; 3 more were born in the years that followed her death. Four of her
grandchildren having married before she died, she became a great grandmother a little bit
more than a year before dying. Our founder also left behind her sister, Sophie,
married to François Laberge, as well as several nephews and nieces. The anniversary
of her death is solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.
